Clwydian Range
The Clwydian
Mountain Range extends for some 20 miles, from Prestatyn on the coast in
the north, down to Llandegla in the south. There are 9 summits exceeding
1,000' high. The highest is Moel Famau (Mother of Mountains) on the
slopes of which sits Cilcain. At its peak lie the ruins of the Jubilee
Tower built in 1812. There are subsidiary peaks crowned with ruins of
massive hill forts - Foel Fenlli (near Llanferres), Moel-y-Gaer (near
Llanbedr); Moel Arthur (near Cilcain) and Pen-y-Cloddiau (near
Nannerch). The forts had multiple protective ramparts, and were all
constructed around 2,000 years ago during the early Iron Age or Bronze
Age. See the section 'Hill Forts' on the 'Old Cilcain' page. |
